The Quarter Fund is, an untainted, optimistic group of twenty-somethings, ready to get their hands dirty in an exploration of philanthropy. Incidentally, as we are beginning to realize, philanthropy isn’t really all that dirty. We meet four times a year in the highly sanitary conditions of the local breweries, where over the course of a round of beers and most likely a basket of fries, we make a $500 grant and a commitment to volunteer for a morning with a Boulder County nonprofit. Each quarter we shift our nonprofit focus – basic needs might be one quarter, and environmental concerns might be another – so that members are constantly exposed to new missions and new perspectives. In making investment decisions with our time and hard-earned dollars, we hope to discover those causes which truly inspire us to throw caution to the wind and give like we’ve never given before (which we really haven’t).
In April of 2014, after recognizing that every fund must begin somewhere, $100 was collected from thirteen twenty-somethings to start the Quarter Fund. Then something magical happened. A very generous donor, perhaps impressed that a twenty-something had opted to spend $100 on charity rather than a Breckenridge lift ticket, added $1,000 to the grant-making pot. Over the next twelve months, the Quarter Fund distributed all of the $2,000…nearly all it had raised thus far, meaning that this year we will need to raise funds again from scratch. The Quarter Fund does plan on receiving $100 from each board member annually, however we cannot continue depend upon dues alone, especially if we plan to be self-sustaining. Over the next five years, we aspire to reach a granting level of at least $5,000 per annum and a board consisting of 25 members.
To have a real shot at achieving those metrics, there’s no doubt about it, we are going to need an endowment. With your gift, the Quarter Fund can begin building an engine that will eventually provide a 1:1 match for board membership dues year after year. More importantly your donation will provide the momentum necessary to procure additional contributions. A contribution from you would represent an amazing gesture in the eyes of a fund just getting its start and a long-term investment in the philanthropic education of Boulder County’s millennial generation.
